I walk into to the gym. I can’t think of any metaphor more apt than to say that the people here are merely going through the motions. Nobody here knows what it means to train. Casually lifting weights? Yes; Jogging at a comfortable pace? Sure. But training? Putting your soul into that bar and lifting like your life depends upon it? Imagining a wolf gnashing at your heels as you sprint away from it like your life is at stake? No. They don’t understand that. They’re just here for toned abs and flashy biceps. It’s how we all start — well, at least how I started. That self-conscious desire to better yourself aesthetically. But my desire to run has grown into something far beyond that. I am here for me. I have my reasons. And you must have yours if you’ve ever achieved a god-damned thing in this sport. This torturous competition. It’s an everlasting struggle between your willpower and the demands of nature. And with each step you take beyond your comfort zone, the strength of your heart grows alongside your character. Can you overcome that which refuses to be beaten?
